Building a Home Power Monitoring System

Installation

By the time I finally tracked down a panel with enough space in it, I had already finished drywalling the garage (except for where the old panel is):

This meant that I was going to have to fit the new panel in the gap to the right of the old panel. Unfortunately the new panel was about an inch too wide so I had to make a few adjustments. First step was to rip out the right side of the enclosure for the old panel so I could trim off an inch:

I then pulled all the wiring and put a new right edge in place for the enclosure:

As you can see from this shot of the old panel, there isn't much space for anything in there.

With the wiring and adjustments out of the way, it was time to prep the new sub-panel. I used a 200amp panel as it had plenty of empty space for mounting the Veris board. In this shot you can see I trimmed the edges off the Veris board mounting bracked and mounted it to the bottom of the new panel:

Here is a shot with the Veris board installed:

With the board mounts in place, it was time to mount the new panel next to the old one. As you can see from this shot, the panel fits nicely and happens to mesh perfectly with the conduit from the old panel.

Next step is to bring 100amp service from the old panel to the new panel. I installed a 100amp breaker in the old box and connected the new wiring:

Then I attached the service to the mains on the new panel:

I will stress again... THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!

With the service attached to the new panel, it was time to install all the branch circuits:

Notice in this shot I've got the CT's installed on the wires.

Even though I used nylon straps to hold the CT's in place it was still a bit of a mess so I used a series of straps to build a brick of CT's:

Here is a shot of the panel with one set of CT's installed:

And finally, the finished panel once the drywall is completed:
